Virtual Echocardiography Symposium

Oct 3, 2020 09:30AM to Oct 3, 2020 04:30PM

The OAMRS is hosting its second annual Echocardiography Symposium. In 2020  DMS, Cardiologists and student Sonographers will gather virtually for an exciting day of speakers covering a wide variety of topics such as 3D Echocardiography, strain analysis and innovative technologies. Attendees will gain insights and tools to enhance their practice with live demonstrations by applications specialists and an interactive platform for posing questions to our speakers!

Javier Ganame, MD, PhD, FASE

Cardiologist, Associate Professor of Medicine

McMaster University

The assessment of diastolic function is important as this correlates with symptoms and prognosis. This can, however, be challenging. We use an approach integration obtained from multiple imaging findings. The rationale for assessing diastolic function will be presented. A roadmap for the interpretation of these findings will be shown.

Dr. Ganame is an Associate Professor of Medicine at McMaster University. His areas of expertise include congenital heart disease in the adult, echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging.

Judy Jones, DMS, RDCS (AE,PE,FE)

Cardiac Sonographer, Instructor

London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC)

Mohawk College

Echo Assessment of Congenital Heart Repairs

The presentation will review commonly encountered congenital heart defects and their repairs.  Attendees will learn how to assess these patients on echo; live loops will demonstrate the key echo findings. The presentation will highlight important clinical pearls not to be overlooked when scanning.

Judy Jones has an impressive career spanning almost 30 years working at LHSC in the echo lab performing paediatric and fetal echocardiography. She also teaches part-time in the Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography program at Mohawk College

Dr. David McCarty, MB, BCh, MRCP (UK), FRCPC

Cardiologist, Associatie Professor of Medicine

London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC)

Western University

This presentation will review the key echocardiographic features of the three major classes of cardiomyopathies – hypertrophic, dilated and restrictive – with accompanying discussion of underlying etiology and pathophysiology.

Dr. McCarty is a consultant Cardiologist at LHSC and Associate Professor of Medicine at Western University. He was, until 2020, the medical director of echo labs at LHSC and led the Echocardiography Fellowship Program at Western. He makes regular visits to teach cardiology and cardiac ultrasound in Africa accompanied by Canadian Sonographers.

Renato Morcerf DMS, RDCS, RVT

Lead Cardiac Sonographer and Technical Manager

KMH Cardiology Centres Inc

How to Improve the Precision and Accuracy of the Technical Assessment of the Left Ventricular Diastolic Function – Technical Review and Case Studies

The analysis and interpretation of Doppler and 2D echocardiographic parameters of diastolic function require integrated data precisely and accurately acquired. The primary goal of the 2016 ASE guidelines was to simplify the approach to the LV diastolic function and thus increase the utility of the guidelines in clinical daily practice. However, the position of sample volumes and calipers as well as the acquisition and optimization of the Doppler signal and 2D imaging should still, and always, be carefully examined. The objective of this presentation is to review the technique and important considerations of each echocardiographic parameter, going beyond the “simplified” table of the guidelines.

Renato Morcerf is a registered cardiac sonographer with international medical graduation and international specialization in cardiovascular ultrasound. Renato has lived in Canada for 9 years where he has been scanning and sharing his technical knowledge, skills and enthusiasm in echocardiography as the lead cardiac sonographer at KMH Cardiology Centre.

  Dr. Katherine Connolly MD, FRCPC

Hamilton Health Sciences

Dr. Katherine Connolly is a cardiologist with additional training in Echocardiography as well as Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at McMaster University.
