This presentation will give participants the opportunity to hear about working in remote First Nations communities and the challenges they face. It was also inform participants about what it takes to set up and run a community based ultrasound program in remote communities; along with the challenges of delivering and accessing healthcare in remote regions.
A graduate with Dean’s Honours in 3 healthcare modalities John had worked
tirelessly when in late 1995 The Sioux Lookout Zone Hospital, University of Toronto
and Health Canada (FNIB) recruited him to set up a pilot program to last 3 months to
bring ultrasound to the remote First Nations Communities of Northwestern Ontario.
John stayed for over 21 years bringing Prenatal and maternal mortality rates in line
with the Canadian general population from those of third world countries. He now
speaks on his experiences and the peoples he served, early childhood trauma and
how it affects the trajectory of one’s life.
