Basic Safety Aspects of Static Magnetic Fields, RF Fields and Gradient Fields

Jeff Frimeth, M.Sc., MCCPM, CIIP, MRSO (MRSCTM), MRSE (MRSCTM), CDIP

Numerous factors must be considered in order to mitigate or eliminate the risks associated with MR imaging to patients and staff. Of these potential risks, this presentation will discuss the risks associated with three types of magnetic fields (Bo and dB/dx, RF, and dB/dt). Each of these magnetic fields pose different types of safety risks unless appropriate controls are implemented and therefore must be well understood first in order to control the risks.

11:00 A.M. ET

Preventing Thermal Injuries In MRI

William Faulkner, B.S.,R.T.(R)(MR)(CT), FSMRT, MRSO (MRSC™)

The presentation will cover the various mechanisms of thermal injuries in patients undergoing MRI and techniques to minimize or eliminate the risks. Following the presentation the attendee will be able to state the means by which thermal injuries can occur in MRI and list steps which can be taken to prevent these injuries.

12:30 P.M. ET

MRI Implant Safety: Beyond the Basics

Mary Ellen Jafari, Diagnostic Medical Physicist, MS, DABR, MRSE, MRSO, FACR

This presentation addresses safety evaluation for complex implant considerations, such as pacemakers and ICDs, multiple types of implanted devices, and foreign bodies. Learning Objectives include: knowing and understanding safety issues when scanning patients with a Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device (CIED); understanding safety evaluation for patients with multiple implanted devices; and practicing safety evaluation of patients with complex implant situations

1:30 P.M. ET

Safety Issues Concerning Gadolinium Contrast Agents

Dr. Michael Noseworthy

Objectives:

1) To understand the fundamentals on how contrast agents work to change MRI signals
2) To learn the differences between Gd-based contrast agents (linear, macrocyclic)
3) An understanding of Gd toxicity issues will be presented and discussed.

The Kanal Method: How to Answer The Question, "Would you accept this device/foreign body patient for an MR Study?"

Dr. Emanuel Kanal

MRI differs from all other diagnostic imaging modalities used to date in several ways.  One of the key unique aspects of MRI is its utilization of multiple energies simultaneously in order to generate diagnostic images.  These various energies are the source of the power – but also potential safety issues – behind MRI as a diagnostic tool. This presentation will identify for the attendee the various energies or fields used in the MR imaging process, the spatial distribution of these energies during MR imaging, some of the potential safety issues associated with these fields. It will then describe a standardized approach towards assessing the potential risks of exposing patients with implants, devices, or foreign bodies to the various fields used in the MR imaging process, thus enabling a thorough risk benefit assessment for all device/foreign body patients who are asked to undergo an MR imaging study.
