Protecting the Public

OAMRS represents the professionals

Simply put OAMRS represents the professional practitioners of Ontario – Sonographers and MRT members in good standing.  OAMRS' vision promotes excellence in patient care through innovative professional development and advancement of the profession.

Who represents the patients?

The public and patients are represented by The College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO).  The CMRTO sets the standards of practice and entry to practice requirements for MRTs. They also deal with any public concerns through a complaints and discipline process which ensures that MRTs continue to practice safely, effectively and ethically within their working environments.

The CMRTO protects the public through its Code of Ethics and by setting standards of practice including:

  1. Sets entry to practice requirements for medical radiation technologists
  2. Ensures MRTs maintain ongoing professional competency
  3. Investigates concerns/complaints from the public. Judges/enforces disciplinary action if needed

At the current time Sonography is not a regulated profession.  OAMRS is working hard with the Ontario government to become regulated.  Unfortunately, there is no government licensed body to be advocates on behalf of the patient.
