OAMRS Virtual RT Symposium 2022 | October 15, 2022

The 2022 OAMRS Virtual Radiation Therapy Symposium kicks off on October 15 at 9 am ET with presentations from a selection of seasoned MRT(T)s and medical professionals. These speakers are all leading figures in their respective fields and promise to deliver intuitive and eye-opening information focused on radiation therapy.


The Symposium will include presentations from Yanni Lai, MRT(T) of the Sunnybrook Hospital, Tracey Lundstrom, MRT(T), Alberta Health Services and Kari Osmar, MRT(T), University of Alberta. We will also hear from Brian Liszewski, (MRT)(T)Advisor, Radiation Therapy and Infrastructure Planning at Ontario Health, Anita Vloet, MRT(T), Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Dr. Lesley Buckley, PhD, MCCPM and Dr. Matt Volpini, MD, BSc of The Ottawa Hospital and University of Ottawa.

Perspectives of AI from a Radiation Therapist

Yannie Lai, MRT(T), Sunnybrook Hospital

Yannie works as a Radiation Therapist at Sunnybrook Hospital where she also serves as co-leader of the patient experience committee in the RT department and an educator for the SBRT Training Program. Her presentation will touch on the role of AI in radiation therapy, and her specific experiences working with this new technology.

How I Stumbled into the World of AI in Radiation Therapy

Anita Vloet, MRT(T), RMP AI Patient Auto Scheduling Project, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre

Anita works as both a Radiation Therapist as well as a project manager at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. She will provide insight into her experience working with Artificial Intelligence to build a patient auto-scheduling program, and the effectiveness of such a program for scheduling radiation therapy procedures in her department.

From Reporting to Action: Effective Incident Learning in Radiation Therapy

Brian Liszewski, MRT(T), Advisor, Radiation Therapy and Infrastructure Planning at Ontario Health

Brian is an Advisor for Ontario Health, and also lectures in the Department of Radiology at the University of Toronto. In his presentationBrian will help attendees identify and make use of incident reporting tools to foster a "just culture" of incident reporting.

The Impact of External Factors on Institutional Incident Reporting Systems: Lessons from a Pandemic

Dr. Leslie Buckley, PhD, MCCPM and Dr. Matt Volpini, MD, BSc, The Ottawa Hospital and University of Ottawa

Leslie and Matt both work at The Ottawa Hospital. Their presentation will focus on the impacts of Covid-19 workflow changes on the incident reporting system and how external factors can expose the fragility of a healthy incident learning culture.

Surveying the Landscape: First Nations, Metis and Inuit Cancer Resources in Radiation Therapy

Tracey Lundstrom, MRT(T); Alberta Health Services, Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Kari Osmar, MRT(T)Med.; University of Alberta, Tom Baker Cancer Centre

Tracey and Kari both currently work at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary. Their presentation will focus on resources in radiation therapy for treating cancer among First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities in Alberta. They will continue to discuss the results of a survey taken in relation to cancer resources in the province, and what next steps can be taken to impact awareness of resources for radiation therapists in First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities.
