Queen's Park Lobby Days are an opportunity for OAMRS members to describe the vital role that MRTs and DMSs play in the lives of Ontario patients and showcase the pride of the profession to Ontario Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs). Each year, OAMRS members are invited to join the OAMRS team at Queen's Park for an informative luncheon and series of meetings with key government stakeholders.

On November 2, OAMRS leadership and members had the opportunity to visit Ontario's legislature at Queen's Park in Toronto for a day of in-person advocacy on behalf of Medical Radiation Technologists and Sonographers in Ontario.

OAMRS leadership met with Ontario's Premier, Hon. Doug Ford in his office at Queen's Park, and with Ontario's Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Hon. Sylvia Jones, to discuss solutions for shortening wait times for diagnostic imaging and for addressing staffing shortages of MRTs and Sonographers in Ontario. OAMRS representatives were also present for Question Period, where France Gélinas, MPP Nickel Belt and Health Critic welcomed OAMRS President and CEO, Board Directors and members. Question Period was followed by an engaging luncheon reception for MPPs and OAMRS members.

At the luncheon, OAMRS Board Director, Kati Tuomi, along with OAMRS President and Chief Executive Officer, Greg Toffner, spoke to the Members of Provincial Parliament in attendance about medical radiation sciences in Ontario and what can be done to better assist the hardworking members of the profession. This year’s discussions focused on wait times in diagnostic imaging and potential solutions that could ease the overwhelming stress on MRTs and Sonographers and improve patient care in Ontario. After these remarks, MPP Lise Vaugeois (Thunder Bay – Superior North) addressed guests on behalf of the Official Opposition, and MPP Dr. Adil Shamji spoke on behalf of the Ontario Liberal Party, in support of Ontario’s MRTs and Sonographers.

Thank you to all the dedicated members who took time out of their busy schedules to join us at Queen’s Park on November 2. We invite all our members to get involved in our professional advocacy, as we continue to work with the provincial government to promote further awareness of the essential role that MRTs and DMSs play in Ontario’s healthcare system.
